Magnus Peterson grew up in Västergötland, Sweden in a family where music was a natural part of life, and now resides in Uppsala where he is involved with various projects as a double bass and flute player, as well a concert promoter in the jazz and world scene. Meanwhile also continuosly exploring the inner circuits of life as a researcher and clinician in pain medicine.
Originally trained in classical music on both flute and bass, Magnus has had an ever growing love with jazz music since early on. Having spent time in West Africa playing with and learning from the local drummers, African culture has influenced his rhythmic approach to music and his sound, thus making him relevant in both Jazz and World music.
His basic musical training came from Jörgen Sandblom and Orvar Axell in Sweden and at Bennington College, Vermont, USA from bassist Jeffrey Levine and flautist Sue Ann Khan. This was also where he was taught and inspired by free form player Bill Dixon. One of the strongest and most unique artists in the circle around free form pianist Cecil Taylor.
Continuously studying, Magnus has been an adept of bass legends such as Red Mitchell and Rufus Reid, and received invaluable teachings from pianist Gösta Rundqvist. In practice, playing quintet format with Sweden’s jazz legends Roland Keijser, saxophone and Bosse Broberg trumpet, together with Mattias Åström on piano and Daniel Olsson on drums, was an academy of the highest degree.
Throughout his musical career, Magnus has played behind a long list of great musicians such as Nisse Sandström, Krister Andersson, Bernt Rosengren, Nelson Faria to name only a few. He is continuously heard with legendary singer/guitarist Thomas Arnesen, as well as with extraordinary singers such as Mpho Ludidi and Sani Gamedze. Percussionist Celso Paco, drummer Sebastian Voegler and guitar players Andy Fite, Jonas Isaksson, Anders Färdal, Mats Larsson are among his current associates.
